1970s
Thomas D. Abernethy, Jr., (B.S. ’77), Health and Physical Education, recently taught English and Health and Physical Education in Albania for a school year. He then returned home, completed a Master of Education degree, received his Algebra I endorsement, and now is teaching math at Lee-Davis High School in Hanover County, Va. He also is earning his secondary math degree to meet the math needs of a wider range of students. Mr. Abernethy lives in Richmond, Va.
Frank Overbey (M. Ed. ’78), Administration and Supervision, retired from the Virginia Information Technologies Agency on June 30, 2006 after 30 years of service with the Commonwealth of
Virginia. He now is employed as an Information Technology training manager with Northrop Grumman in Richmond, Va.
Joyce Pritchard (B.S./E ’70) is cofounder of the Southside Virginia Czech/Slovak Heritage Society.
Jocelyn Henry-Whitehead (BS/E ’79) published her book In Faith Together We Shape in 2006.
1980s
Ruth Perkinson (B.S. ’89) has written her first novel, Vera’s Still Point, and is working on a second book. She taught English and Creative Writing at J.R. Tucker High School and Moody Middle School in Richmond, Va., for nearly 10 years.
1990s
Kevin W. Bruny (M.Ed. ’91), SPHR, is a contributing author in the recently published book, The Next Generation of Corporate Universities: Innovative Approaches for Developing People and Expanding
Organizational Capabilities, where he details the development and launch of a corporate university model in a local government setting. As the Chief Learning Officer and University Dean of Chesterfield University, Mr. Bruny led Chesterfield County, Va., to be the first local government to recently appear on Training Magazine’s Top 125, an annual ranking of companies leading the way in employee training and development where the county ranked fifty-third on the 2007 listing.
Danna Richardson (M.T. ’99) married William Burgess on July 8, 2006. She teaches with Henrico County Public Schools in Va. They live in Richmond, Va.
Gary Rule (B.S./E ’93) married Heather Johnson on July 22, 2006. He is a counselor with The Choice Group and she is executive secretary of the Central Virginia Soccer Association. They live in Ashland, Va.
2000s
Troy Austin (M.S. ’03) was named Interim Director of Athletics at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. He had been Longwood’s Director of Development for Intercollegiate Athletics since October 2005 and director of program development and marketing relations for the National Football League Coaches Association from 2003-05.
Dara Butler (M.T. ’00) married Scott Geller Aug. 5, 2006. She teaches special education in Henrico County, Va., and he works for Genworth Financial. They live in Richmond.
Lauren Eadie (M.T. ’03) married Nathaniel Baker on June 3, 2006. She works for Chesterfield County Public Schools in Chesterfield, Va., and he works for Masco Contractor Services. They live in Richmond, Va.
Donald E. Finn (Ph.D. ’05) has been appointed Assistant Professor of Education (Adult Education and Professional Development) at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va.
Michelle Kitchen (M.T. ’05) married Joshua Mannon on July 15, 2006. They live in Chesterfield, Va.
Anna Mullins (M.Ed. ’05) married Christopher Parker Aug. 26, 2006. They live in Eden, NC.
Chuck Terrell (Ph.D. ’01) is Vice President of Workforce Development & Lifelong Learning with Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Va.
Sarah Turpin (M.T. ’02) married Michael Rowe on July 1, 2006.
Sharman Wallen (C/E ’06) is a Title I reading specialist for Mary Scott
Elementary School in Richmond, Va., where she lives.
Rashard J. Wright (M.T. ’01) is principal of Spratley Middle School in Hampton, Va.

Janet L. Clements (M.Ed., '00) meets with FEMA officials following Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Clements is Chief Deputy State Coordinator of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
