School of the Arts applicants
In addition to the university Application for Undergraduate Admission, all applicants (freshmen and transfer students) to the School of the Arts must submit supplemental materials and a $55 application fee. Applicants who apply online should submit a $30 application fee. The application review committee reviews all applications to programs in the School of the Arts.
All visual arts and technical theatre applicants are required to submit a visual portfolio with their application. All performing arts, technical theatre and theatre education applicants are required to visit VCU for an audition and/or interview. Please see the appropriate descriptions for details regarding portfolio and audition requirements. Fashion merchandising, film (cinema) and art history applicants are not required to submit a visual portfolio; however, film (cinema) applicants must submit two essays. Students applying to any visual or performing arts disciplines also must submit a recommendation.
Transfer applicants

All transfer students applying to visual arts programs and to technical theatre are required to submit a visual portfolio with their application. The transfer application deadline for visual arts programs is May 1. All performing arts, technical theatre and theatre education applicants are required to visit VCU for an audition and/or interview. Transfer applicants to performing arts programs in the School of Arts must use the Feb. 1 freshman application deadline.
Students applying to any visual or performing arts disciplines also must submit a letter of recommendation.
Undergraduate recommendation form
Applicants to all visual arts programs and performing arts programs except those in the Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts are required to submit one undergraduate reference form with their application, although as many as three forms may be submitted. Applicants to all programs in the Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts are required to submit two undergraduate reference forms with their application, although as many as three forms may be submitted.
The recommendation form is available online. You should fill out Section I of the form and give it to the person best qualified to assess your ability in the indicated area of your major interest, such as your art, dance, drama or music teacher if you have had such instruction while in high school or college. If you have not had such instruction, please give it to any teacher, counselor or employer who is able to assess your ability. The recommendation form(s) should be placed in a sealed envelope and may be sent in with your application materials or under separate cover.
