Academic advising
One of the many services offered through VCU’s University College, academic advising makes sure you are on the right track for your career goals.
Learning Support
If you find that you need some assistance with a particular class or just some additional practice, look into the Learning Support that's available.
Core Education Program
The Core Education Program is a two-semester sequence of courses in which all first-years students are enrolled. The Focused Inquiry courses target a small number of specific skill areas.
Sections of the courses are intentionally kept small to allow students to get to know each other and learn in a small setting.
Each semester, the courses are themed, encouraging student engagement in a broad spectrum of disciplines.
New Student Programs and Orientation
The University College Office of New Student Programs and Orientation offers ongoing programs for incoming students and their families to aid in the adjustment to college.
Career Center
The VCU Career Center offers career assessment, advising and counseling, online job-search advice and listings, an electronic database for employer referrals, campus interviews, computerized self-assessment, employment assistance, career fairs, a library with print and video resources, and resources for finding a work-study job.
Campus safety
The VCU Police Department ensures that our two campuses are safe for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Police officers patrol on mountain bikes, in cars and on foot. Emergency telephones are located around both campuses offering immediate connection to the police dispatcher.
The Security Escort Service provides walking or riding escorts in the evening for members of the university community traveling to and from campus-related activities. In addition, the VCU Police Department offers safety awareness and crime prevention information and services, as well as a victim/witness program to assist members of the university community on and off campus.
Disability Support Services
VCU is committed to providing students with disabilities equal opportunities to benefit from all programs, services and activities offered. Students with disabilities are responsible for self-identification prior to requesting services and may do so at any time by presenting documentation to their campus coordinator. The Office of Disability Support Services determines appropriate academic adjustments such as program and exam modifications, classroom accommodations and auxiliary aids.
Health and counseling services
University Student Health Services
With outpatient locations on both campuses, University Student Health Services provides high-quality general medical, allergy and gynecological clinics; pharmacy, laboratory and vaccination services; and after-hours emergency care. In addition, the Office of Health Promotion provides a full program of health education activities and opportunities for student leadership. The affordable group health insurance policy offered to students through USHS is highly recommended for students without other health insurance coverage.
University Counseling Services
University Counseling Services provides confidential counseling to students on both campuses who seek personal, educational and vocational assistance. Services include group, individual and couples counseling, as well as programs and workshops on topics related but not limited to drug and alcohol abuse, depression, eating disorders, multicultural issues and academic study skills.
Multicultural Student Affairs
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs advises student groups, provides individual and group counseling, coordinates university events, and facilitates involvement by students of color and advocates for their concerns and interests.
The office also staffs the Center for Multicultural Activities in the Commons, which provides numerous events with the purpose of encouraging all members of the learning community to deepen their understanding of race, ethnicity and culture.
VCU Libraries
The VCU Libraries is the third largest research library in Virginia, advancing teaching, learning and research at VCU with a comprehensive collection of digital and print materials and outstanding physical facilities and computer resources for individual or group study.
We have two main libraries: the James Branch Cabell Library on the Monroe Park Campus and the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences on the MCV Campus. Together the libraries hold more than 1.9 million print volumes, 3 million microforms, 17,500 digital and print serials plus additional access to 18,600 electronic serials, and more than 40,000 multimedia titles. The Tompkins-McCaw Library has the largest medical collection in the state and outstanding electronic access to the latest in life sciences information and research. Cabell Library houses one of the largest book art collections in the Southeast and the largest popular culture and comic art collection in the state.
The VCU Libraries is the only patent and trademark depository in Virginia and has particular strengths in medicine, science, engineering and information technology. Both libraries provide hundreds of computer workstations located throughout the buildings as well as off-campus access from residence halls and home to all computerized resources. Recent major enhancements include expanded student study space, new furniture and “cyberlounges” with coffee bars in each library.
