The VCU Police Department is assisted in its mission by approximately 45 hourly and 17 full-time security personnel. This auxillary force is not empowered
to make arrests nor carry firearms; however, they assist the uniformed police officers in a variety of ways, such as providing an
escort service, building security, property checks and added visibility within the community.
Security Escort Information
Faculty, students, and the staff of VCU are encouraged to call the Security Escort Service, operated by the VCU Police Department,
whenever the need arises. You may dial 828-WALK from an ordinary telephone, or activate one of the Emergency Reporting
Telephones (ERTS) described below. The hours of operation are listed below for each campus.
Emergency Reporting Telephone System (ERTS)
There are currently 295 ERTS phones located at various areas throughout both campuses and satellite properties. The ERTS phones connect directly with the VCU Police
Department Emergency Communications Division. Most of them have a flashing yellow strobe light above them. In some buildings,
they are red wall phones. You may call for an escort from one of these phones on campus. Also, please feel free to read the VCU Building Access Control Policy.
Panic Buttons
There are currently 112 Panic Buttons located in Academic Buildings and 224 Panic Buttons located in hospital buildings, including the satellite properties.
